The Making of a Lawn Jockey

February 20, 2011

My name is Joque Graves,( Mr. Washington called me [JOCKO].). I come here with my father near Mr. Penn’s forested glens and hills near Trenton.

We’ve been in the middle of this ruckus with these men with loud coats, noses turned up like Turkeys in a downpour. The only thing is that they ain’t dying quick enough for any of Mr. Washington’s friends.

Mr. Washington’s got a plan to take some fighters across the Del-ware, ( You can see my Pa with ’em in the painting.), and send the “Loud Coats” home as cold storage so that we can work this land the way they wants. But, Mr. Washington says I’m too young to make a “proper” fighter yet. Heck, I sees to all ‘im’s Hawses good ’nuff. Back in ‘Ginya’ ain’t a bale I can’t pitch a-ways !

But, he says I should “grow” more and learn ‘responsablity’ first. He told me that I make sure that he and he’s friends get back right, that I should wait here at camp, so that when they come back, at dark, that I give ’em my “lighterns’ glow, to find the hawses.

I was young, but, Mr. Washington chose one of he’s bestest to do my task…

It was too cold, but I held my pawzishun, like a “STATUE”, I stood waiting ’til they got back. I was an ice block when they got back, but that “Lightern” hadn’t loss its fire when they found me… Froze there… just as any “GOOD” SOLDIER at ‘is post. Showing Mr. Washington’s VOLUNTEER SOLDIERS the way to safety.

Mr. Washington couldn’t give me a proper burr-yal a’cause the “loud coats” was bringin’ in them big ol’ [HESSIAN] folk, from Germ-knee, to help ’em  save  King George’s “face”.

Although I’m rotten in the roots of an Oak tree Mr. Washington had ‘is skulpter build a “likeness” of what I looked like… stood it by the steps of ‘is front porch just like he found me that night.

Now, for awhile a lot of  my kindred thought that my statue was an ‘N-salt to ’em. But to let y’all know it was a great “[LINEN]” man’s way o’ sayin’ THANKS to someone who’ done a MAN’S WORK before they was.

After the war was won my statue got a rebirth from the folk that built the `’underground railroad’, you know the one inj-neered by Hair-yet Tubmum? The folks that was the stashin mastahs would have me stand infront o’ they’s house to tell my kin that they’s house was SAFE.

My name is Joque Graves I’d seen, almos’ twe’ve summahs  afores I paid MY fee for YOUR FREEDOM…
